Apollo(Boucher)

Boucher: The Raising of the Sun

Here’s a sneak peek at what’s in store for our 2013–2014 series, which we’re really excited about, and which we hope will make you want to pounce on subscriptions and tickets as soon as they become available.

Our orchestral and chamber series opens with Brandenburg 5 & Co., featuring the eponymous work by Bach— possibly the flashiest and likely also the prettiest harpsichord concerto ever written—plus some Vivaldi, Scarlatti, and Couperin.

Holiday in Paris features music by Forqueray, Blavet, Guignon, Guillemain, the French musicians who invited Telemann to spend the Christmas holiday in France—fulfilling his lifetime dream—along with some of Telemann’s “Paris” Quartets that he’d written for the occasion.

Tenor Aaron Sheehan joins the Chamber Players for A Secret Fire, a special program of songs and chamber music from the court of Louis XIV, with music by Lully, Charpentier, Lambert and Couperin, including scenes from Actéon, Orphée descendant and Le Marriage forcé.

Apollo at Play is dedicated to Lully and his legacy, with a suite by his student Cousser (Kusser), and Stravinsky’s neo-baroque homage to Lully, Apollon musagète, alongside Lully’s own incidental music for Le Bourgeois gentilhomme.

Our season finishes with Elements, composers’ depictions of nature in its fury and glory, with music from Marais’s opera Alcyon (Halcyon), Telemann’s orchestral tribute to the Elbe, and Les Éléments, Rebel’s creation tone-poem from before there was officially such a thing as a tone poem.

We are very excited to let you know that we will perform Apollo at Play and Elements in the Perelman Theater of the Kimmel Center!

Our recital series continues for its second season with three more soloist programs: co-director Richard Stone on lute and theorbo; principal cellist Lisa Terry on viola da gamba; and a special joint triple recital marking the 300th anniversary of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach’s birth, with Gwyn Roberts on flute, Karina Schmitz on viola, and Adam Pearl on harpsichord.

Season passes will go on sale soon, so stay tuned for the when’s and where’s and other details so you can get your season passes for this not-to-be-missed season.
