Hailed by Fanfare magazine as “a world-class virtuoso,” Tempesta di Mare’s co-founder and director Gwyn Roberts plays five of Neapolitan composer Francesco Mancini’s rarely-performed recorder sonatas, accompanied by Tempesta colleagues Richard Stone, theorbo, and Adam Pearl, harpsichord.

Roberts recently commented on her personal rediscovery of the Mancini sonatas. “Last year, I cracked open my long-neglected Mancini volume, and wow, what a surprise! These are twelve of the finest recorder sonatas I have ever played. Mancini’s music is endlessly inventive, with catchy allegros, melting adagios, tantalizing extensions and witty asides. I can’t wait to play them with my favorite continuo team.”

One of the founders and directors of Tempesta di Mare, flutist and recorder player Gwyn Roberts has been a soloist with the Philadelphia Chamber Orchestra, Philomel Baroque Orchestra, Piffaro, Recitar Cantando of Tokyo, and at the Prague Spring Festival of New York. Gwyn Roberts is Director of Early Music at the University of Pennsylvania and is on faculty at Peabody Conservatory. The Birmingham News recently noted, “So much of the sheer joy of Tempesta di Mare is Roberts’ beautiful, rich tone and brilliant passage work, and the manner in which those and every other weapon in her arsenal are put in musical service.”

Tempesta’s new Artist Recital Series features our individual principal musicians at two of the world’s great private art collections: the new Barnes on the Parkway and Woodmere Art Museum in Chestnut Hill. Concert tickets include admission to the permanent collections following the the performances.
