In 1737, Georg Philipp Telemann fulfilled his lifelong dream of traveling to Paris. He already had a long-standing invitation from some of the finest French musicians, and his gambling, cheating second wife was finally out of the picture. Plus he wanted to do something about the unauthorized publications of his compositions that had been appearing there. So he took an extended leave from his job as Music Director for the City of Hamburg and went to France, where he stayed for eight months of playing with the local musicians, attending concerts at the famed Concert Spirituel, composing, and hobnobbing.

“eight months in France playing with the local musicians, attending concerts, composing, and hobnobbing”

Holiday in Paris features two of Telemann’s famous “Paris Quartets,” one from the set that had been circulating in pirate editions prior to his visit, and the other from a new set, composed during his visit. He premiered the latter in Paris with the French flutist Michel Blavet, violinist Jean-Pierre Guignon, and gambist Jean-Baptiste Forqueray, whose music also appears on the program.

Performances take place on November 23 at 8:00 at the Arch Street Meeting House in Center City and on November 24 at 4:00 the Presbyterian Church of Chestnut Hill. Tickets online or for more information: info@tempestadimare.org or 215-755-8776.
